Clean Up Australia Day

Waste Warriors

What’s Inside This Lesson

This lesson explores how our waste affects the environment. By investigating how materials breakdown, students will learn why sorting rubbish into compost, recycling, and landfill is essential for a healthy planet.

Lesson Outcomes

  • ACARA Version 9.0

    Students will:

    • Identify how human activities, including waste production, influence and impact the environmental characteristics of places (AC9HS5K03).
    • Categorise waste materials based on their properties, decomposition rates, and sustainable management needs, considering views on sustainability (AC9HS4K05).
    • Explain why different waste materials require specific sustainable management strategies to minimise environmental impact (AC9HS4K05, AC9HS5K02).

    Students can:

    • Extract key information about waste streams and decomposition from an informational text (AC9HS4S02, AC9HS5S02).
    • Correctly match and sort common waste items based on decomposition timelines and appropriate management streams (AC9HS4S03, AC9HS5S04).
    • Justify a sustainable management method based on an item’s material properties and environmental impact (AC9HS4S05, AC9HS5S05).
  • Victorian Curriculum Version 2.0

    Students will:

    • Identify how human activities and management influence the environmental characteristics of places (VC2HG4K01, VC2HG6K01)
    • Learn about sustainability and its application to the use of natural resources and the management of waste (VC2HG4K09)
    • Understand the importance of sustainability to places and environments and how change is managed (VC2HG6K01, VC2HG6K04)

    Students can:

    • Locate, collect and organise information about waste streams from a range of sources (VC2HG4S02, VC2HG6S02)
    • Analyse information to identify similarities and differences in waste materials and management strategies (VC2HG4S03, VC2HG6S04)
    • Propose and justify sustainable actions or responses using environmental criteria and concepts (VC2HG4S05, VC2HG6S05)
  • NSW Curriculum

    Students will:

    • Identify how human activities, including waste production, influence and impact the environmental characteristics of places (HS2-GEO-01)
    • Categorise waste materials based on their properties, decomposition rates, and sustainable management needs, considering views on sustainability (HS2-GEO-01)
    • Explain why different waste materials require specific sustainable management strategies to minimise environmental impact (HS2-GEO-01)

    Students can:

    • Extract key information about waste streams and decomposition from an informational text (HS2-GEO-01)
    • Correctly match and sort common waste items based on decomposition timelines and appropriate management streams (HS2-GEO-01)
    • Justify a sustainable management method based on an item’s material properties and environmental impact (HS2-GEO-01)
