What’s Inside This Lesson

This lesson explores the Harmony Day values of inclusiveness, respect, and belonging. Students examine Australia’s multicultural identity through the theme “Everyone Belongs” and create a symbolic Harmony Flower to represent unity.


Lesson Outcomes

  • ACARA Version 9.0

    Students will:

    • Understand the significance of Harmony Day as a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity and identity (AC9HS3K02)
    • Recognise the diversity of cultural, religious, and social groups in the community and their importance to identity (AC9HS4K09)
    • Identify the key values of Australian democracy, such as respect and inclusion, that support a harmonious society (AC9HS5K06)

     

    Students can:

    • Locate information about the meaning of Harmony Day using Britannica Studio or provided texts (AC9HS3S02, AC9HS4S02)
    • Describe how different cultures contribute to a vibrant Australian community using subject-specific terms (AC9HS3S07, AC9HS4S07)
    • Create a visual artwork (a flower) that represents peace and coming together (AC9HS3S07)
  • Victorian Curriculum Version 2.0

    Students will:

    • Learn about significant events, symbols and emblems that express Australian identity and diversity and how they are celebrated, commemorated or recognised, including Harmony Week (VC2HH4K03)
    • Learn about the causes and consequences of changes in a local community and the contributions and experiences of people from diverse backgrounds to a local community (VC2HH4K02)
    • Learn about significant individuals, events and ideas that led to Australia’s Federation, including the Constitution and democratic systems of government (VC2HH6K07)

     

    Students can:

    • Identify the features and content of historical sources (VC2HH4S03)
    • Construct historical interpretations, using historical terms and evidence from historical sources (VC2HH4S09)
    • Describe the significance of symbols, emblems, individuals, events and developments (VC2HH4S08)
  • NSW Curriculum

    Students will:

    • Identify celebrations and commemorations of significance in Australia and the world (HT2-1)
    • Describe and explain how significant individuals, groups and events contributed to changes in the local community over time (HT2-2)
    • Apply skills of historical inquiry and communication (HT2-5)

     

    Students can:

    • Identify important Australian celebrations and commemorations and discuss their origins and significance in society (HT2-1)
    • Identify the various cultural groups that live and work in the local community and outline their contribution (HT2-2)
    • Use a range of communication forms (oral, graphic, written) and digital technologies to explain the past (HT2-5)
