Australian Curriculum Version 9.0: A Refreshed Curriculum for a Changing World
Version 9.0 of the Australian Curriculum, developed by ACARA, represents a significant refinement of the F–10 framework. The updated curriculum delivers greater clarity, streamlined content, and a renewed focus on depth over breadth—making it more teachable and impactful in classrooms.
It strengthens integration of general capabilities—such as digital literacy, critical and creative thinking, and ethical understanding—while ensuring cross-curriculum priorities like Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and sustainability are more meaningfully embedded.
What’s Changed and Why It Matters for Schools
The changes in v9.0 reflect a pedagogical shift toward deep learning, inclusion, and 21st-century skills. Key updates include:
- 💡 Streamlined content across learning areas
- 💡 Clearer achievement standards for better assessment and reporting
- 💡 Stronger integration of general capabilities such as critical thinking, digital literacy, and intercultural understanding
- 💡 Cumulative learning progression from Foundation to Year 10
- 💡 Deeper and more meaningful integration of First Nations perspectives across subjects
For example, in Geography (within HASS), the curriculum now places a stronger emphasis on sustainability, space, and interconnection. In English, there is a renewed focus on text structures, audience, and purpose, enhancing students’ analytical and communication skills.
ACARA has also finalised and released v9.0 updates for Technologies, The Arts, Languages, and Health and Physical Education in 2024—bringing all learning areas in line with the new framework.
